When all you want is to sail for the pure enjoyment of sunshine, wind, and waves, you don't need high performance. Contributing Editor Art Paine writes that some of the best boats for this are derivatives of Nathanael Herreshoff’s "Fish Class." Two new designs, which embellish upon the excellence of a Herreshoff Fish, are the Cape Cod Marlin Heritage 23 and Doug Hylan’s Selkie.

Out of a handful of sailboats currently under construction along the Maine coast, two of the prettiest may be a pair of yachts at Rockport Marine designed by Ted Fontaine in his Friendship series. Cari Ali, which was launched last fall but came back to the yard for the winter, is a Friendship 36. The new boat, nearing completion, is a Friendship 50, the largest in the Friendship series so far.

About Just Launched

There are so many boat launchings over the course of the year along the Maine coast—from the largest sailboats, power boats, and lobsteryachts to picnic-style boats, daysailers, center-console runabouts, multihulls, rowing craft, and dinghies-- that you’d be hard-pressed to attend even the majority of them. So instead, come here often to view photos, videos, and descriptions of some of the more interesting boats to “splash” along the coast of Maine.

Boatbuilders: Would you like to see your latest launch included here? To be included in our just launched section, send us a press releases or short write-up, preferably as an MSWord attachment or pasted into the body of an e-mail, and email 5-6 sharp color photographs. Information will be edited for style and length. Be sure to include a contact name, e-mail address and phone number in case we have questions. Send to: launchings@maineboats.com.
