Work at J. C. Minott Boat is usually split between wooden boat construction and restoration. Most boats are less than 25’ but occasionally there are off-site projects involving larger craft. An article in the July 2007 issue of Maine Boats, Homes & Harbors describes one such project, the replacement of bottom planking between tides of the 50’ pinky Summertime. During the summer of 2007, the shop focused on the complete rebuilding of an 1895 Adirondack boat. A new lapstrake Whitehall for the Nemours Estate was completed in early 2008. A 9’ lapstrake dinghy, modeled after the popular Old Town dinghy, was recently built and will hopefully become a stock boat for the shop. Construction is due to begin in early spring 2008 on an electric-powered 20’ launch to be used for fishing on the Finger Lakes. The lapstrake boats are cedar-on-oak, fastened with copper rivets. All canvas-covered boats are filled with the traditional filler. The boat shop in Atkinson, from which Jonathan works, is a cooperative venture. Artist and writer Jerry Stelmok builds new canoes, Bob Volock does most of the restorations, and Andrea Myers builds model canoes and manages the art sales. |
