For more than 30 years, Dick Pulsifer has been building Pulsifer Hamptons in his boatshop on Casco Bay. This spring he will complete the one hundredth Pulsifer Hampton. Renowned for its classic design, stable hull, open cockpit, and responsive handling, the Pulsifer Hampton is hand crafted to provide a lifetime of enjoyment and service.
To build a Pulsifer Hampton takes an estimated 400 man-hours and Dick builds about four boats a year using the traditional strip planking method. Each one is constructed of native white pine, oak, and cedar that have been hand selected and sawn to Pulsifer’s exacting specifications. From the curved white oak transom to the naturally finished decking and custom hull fittings, this is a boat that embodies fine craftsmanship without pretension.
Working with Dick Pulsifer allows customers to share in the pleasure of the boatbuilding process. Dick often remains in contact with his past customers, getting groups of Hampton owners together for annual summer cruises along the coast of Maine and beyond. One of those customers-turned-friend, Brad Woodworth of West Bath, Maine, sums up his experience with a sentiment shared by many Pulsifer Hampton owners. He believes the purchase of hull no. 43 to be “one of the best decisions I’ve made in my life.”
