Floor Art, an art studio located in Friendship, a midcoast fishing village, is only one of several product lines that Patience Sampson creates. The designs that she paints on heavyweight canvas floor coverings have morphed into silk screens applied to clothing and a line of home linens, including napkins, pillow covers, and shower curtains.

The designs on the canvas floor mats are largely repetitive stencils, with up to five overlays. Most of my designs are originals, inspired largely by the coast of Maine. I also love antique tapestries and Art Deco and Art Nouveau designs. The floor cloths are painted on primed, # 8 or #10 canvas, with acrylic and latex paints, and sealed with five coats of polyurethane and three coats of wax. They are sturdy enough for high traffic areas. I also paint placemats using some of these same designs.

My clothing line includes baby and toddler onesies, t-shirts, and sweat shirts in youth and adult sizes. Recently I have included a range of handbags, from utilitarian to elegant evening wear.
