Two artists, two different times, a similar eye for boats. George Wasson was a writer and painter whose work we profile beginning on page 40; photographer Benjamin Mendlowitz lives across the bay from us, and we celebrate the 25th anniversary of his classic Calendar of Wooden Boats in this issue (see page 34). Wasson worked with paint, Mendlowitz works with a camera, but both depict with precision the boats of their time. Actually, their work records the boats of a time that came before theirs.

Soldado Woollett, Culebrense The winner of the 2006 World Championship Boatyard Dog® Trials, held during the fourth annual Maine Boats, Homes, & Harbors Show this past August, was Soldado Woollett from South Thomaston. A Culebrense by blood (she was rescued from the island of Culebra, Puerto Rico) Soldado wowed the judges and the crowd by running a string of lobster crates with blinding speed. Next year’s trials will be held on Sunday, August 12, 2007. For more information about both the trials and the show, click on Show in the top left list.

The Boatyard Dog® trials will be held on Sunday, August 12, 2007 at our show in Rockland, Maine.

Sitting in the gloaming of a fall evening seems as fine a time as any to review the events of the past summer. The darkness takes the edges off the bad times, and the firelight adds to the glow of the good. Thankfully there was far more of the latter...
