Gundalows on the Piscataqua River
Molly Bolster of the nonprofit Gundalow Company will speak on her work with Gundalows, which were the traditional sailing barges used to transport goods and people up and down the tricky, tide-wracked Piscataqua and its tributaries. The Gundalow Company's mission is to promote awareness of the maritime heritage and the contemporary coastal environment in the Piscataqua Region (in New Hampshire and Maine) using a replica gundalow. Bolster has been involved with the replica gundalow off and on for the past 15 years - first as a board member and volunteer educator and now executive director for the past four years. Prior to that, she worked with the Living Classrooms Foundation in Baltimore as an educator onboard the pungy schooner Lady Maryland and spent a year on the building crew of the Pride of Baltimore II. Having had sailing experience on various other sailing school ships including Ernestina, Westward, Brilliant and Te Vega as well as spending four years working at Mystic Seaport Museum, she is a strong supporter of the value of educational programs aboard traditional vessels. The presentation will take place at 7 p.m., at St. Joseph Hall, 160 Derby St., Salem, Massachusetts. This is a free program, and the Hall is handicapped accessible.
