Tech Seminars Offered for Mariners

Tech expert Nigel Calder will run two in-depth seminars in Portland this coming year for boating do-it-yourselfers and marine professionals who want to better understand, install, and repair onboard electrical systems.

Seminar dates are April 17 and 18, and October 29 and 30. Classes will be held at the Hyatt Place Hotel.

The two-day seminars will cover design criteria for DC and AC systems; how to keep batteries healthy; new technologies; sizing and installing electrical circuits in compliance with American Boat and Yacht Council standards; critical safety issues related to AC systems; corrosion; and grounding systems. A hands-on terminal crimping session will be included, as poor connections are often the cause of onboard problems. And Calder has built a demo board that features core pieces of equipment mentioned in the presentation.

Participants will go home with a to-do list of critical checks for any boat and a deck of nearly 600 reference slides.

Calder is author of the Boatowner’s Mechanical and Electrical Manual. The seminars are being sponsored by OceanPlanet Energy in collaboration with Ocean Navigator, Professional Boatbuilder and BoatHowTo.com. For information, pricing, and to register, visit https://oceanplanetenergy.com/seminars/
