Battle of the Gaffers

Maine’s summer racing season showcases some of the world’s finest vintage wooden yachts, mostly big, but sometimes also small. Alison Langley took this photo just after the start of one of the Camden Classics Cup races in July. The 17.5' LWL Dark Harbor 17 Frolic, circa 1920, didn’t stand a chance against Marilee, a 1926 NY 40 recently restored by French and Webb in Belfast. The crew on the smaller vessel barely had time to look up as Marilee charged from behind in a rush of water and rumbling sails and then, like that, was gone. The NY 40 flew on to second place in the regatta.
